PCB Contamination Testing quantifies the amount of ionic contamination present in a printed circuit board (PCB) sample.
The contamination could come from flux residues or handling and is an important issue because it can promote short-circuiting and bridging between conductive contacts on the board.
The contamination testing test works by immersion of the PCB sample into a reservoir of solvent that gradually dissolves the ionic contamination. The solvent has a known resistivity to begin with and this value changes proportionally as more contamination is dissolved. By the end of the test, the level of contamination can be plotted on a contamination testing curve and compared with the industry guidelines from the MIL-P-28809 and DEF-STAN 00-10/3 standards.
The contamination tester, or contaminometer, can accommodate PCBs up to a size of 200mm x 200mm x 20mm.
